Roman-style pizza is one of the reasons KDPO gets up in the morning, so it was a no-brainer that we leapt at the chance to join forces with South Melbourne’s fabulous new Pizzateca Lupa to sing its praises to the world.
The stylish joint from brothers Lino and Gabriele Torre (D.O.C Gastronomia Italiana and Park Street Pasta & Wine) takes its name from the she-wolf of Roman mythology. As you might have guessed, it’s a venue that celebrates the brothers’ Italian upbringing, the food of Rome and the simple beauty of family-style dining.
It’s a place designed for supreme comfort amid stylish surroundings. Right on the buzzing corner of Cecil and Coventry Streets at South Melbourne Market, its warm and tactile fit-out of walnut timber and reed, mahogany reds is courtesy of award-winning architects Jackson Clements Burrows.
Marketgoers can value-add their weekly shop with the daytime offering of pizza by the slice, but it’s hard to resist the lure of settling into one of the 34 seats for the full Roman holiday. Consider it an access all areas pass to antipasti, fresh pasta and crisp, light Roman-style pizza tonda and Italian drinks swinging from cola to cocktails.
Unsurprisingly, Melbourne’s press was eager to hear about the new wolf on the block, and KDPO garnered significant coverage across the board, including Tourism Australia’s May Hot List, which positioned Pizzateca Lupa as a must-visit destination.
